Newcastle secured their place in the Premier League over the last three weeks. The Magpies delivered wins over Leicester City and Southampton to take them over the line. Rafael Benitez's men claimed a 1-1 draw last time out against Brighton and Hove Albion, and have momentum to take into tonight's clash. Benitez will have mixed emotions facing his former club, knowing that a positive result for the Magpies will put a major dent in Liverpool's title hopes.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Newcastle and Liverpool at St James' Park.
Liverpool were on the receiving end of a Lionel Messi special during the week in their defeat to Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash. The Reds played well at Camp Nou, but were undone by the brilliance of the Argentine and a strike from former player Luis Suarez. Jurgen Klopp cannot let that loss affect his players in their bid to secure the Premier League crown. They're unbeaten in their last 15 league games, winning seven on the bounce. Liverpool cannot afford to falter this evening.
NEWCASTLE (3-4-3): Martin Dubravka; Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett; Javier Manquillo, Ki Sung-yueng, Isaac Hayden, Matt Ritchie; Ayoze Perez, Salomon Rondon, Christian Atsu.
NEWCASTLE SUBS: Jonjo Shelvey, Mohamed Diame, Yoshinori Muto, Kenedy, Federico Fernandez, Antonio Barreca, Karl Darlow.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson; Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum; Mohamed Salah, Daniel Sturridge, Sadio Mane.
LIVERPOOL SUBS: James Milner, Joe Gomez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Simon Mignolet, Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi, Joel Matip.
The game has been played a quick pace from the first whistle. Both teams are playing open football, which has resulted in chances at both ends. Liverpool have the edge, taking two of their opportunities. However, Jurgen Klopp will be slightly concerned that the Magpies have been a threat in the final third almost every time they've pushed forward, especially Salomon Rondon. The contest remains in the balance heading into the second half.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Liverpool face Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final clash, needing to overturn a three-goal deficit, on Tuesday at Anfield. Newcastle end their Premier League campaign on the road next week against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
