CONSOLATION FOR BURTON! Dyer thumps an effort through a crowd from close range after Romero failed to collect the ball in the air after a header was sent crashing off the bar! It means nothing in the grand scheme of things, but it's a first goal conceded for United at Old Trafford this season!
FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 4-0 BURTON ALBION.
Goal Lloyd Dyer
90'
Just the one minute to be added on here...
88'
United win themselves a free-kick just over 20 yards out, slightly off to the left of goal. It's in a great position for a shot, which Martial takes, and doesn't miss by much as his effort kisses the side-netting en route behind for a goal-kick.
86'
This is very much in the formality stage now as both sides have pretty much switched off. There seems to be an understanding between the two outfits to let these final minutes play out without any incident and move on to the weekend.
84'
STAT: Manchester United last scored five goals in an EFL Cup match back in September 2010 in a 5-2 victory away to Scunthorpe United.
82'
Into the final 10 minutes and you wouldn't bet against United adding another. They are absolutely dominating possession, with the bulk of it coming in the attacking half. There's not as much intent to their play on the ball, but the chances are still coming.
80'
FLASHED WIDE! Martial trying to match Rashford here with a second on the night, again doing so well to get himself beyond a defender and in a shooting position, but he bends one just wide of the far post from a tight angle!
78'
Joel Pereira enters the game and replaces S. Romero.
L. Akins enters the game and replaces H. Akpan.
And a final change for Burton here as well, as Akpan gives way for Lukas Akins.
United's final change sees Joel Pereira replace Romero.
77'
Great challenge! Herrera threads a delicious throughball in for Martial, who appears to have a clear route to goal, but Naylor slides in from behind to pry the ball away! That's an excellent piece of defending from the Burton centre-half!
75'
As United walk towards the finish line here, it has opened a bit of a window for Burton to enjoy some time in attack. The visitors are just lacking that extra bit of quality that they need to test Romero, however, as another header sails well over the bar.

Description
73'
STAT: Jose Mourinho has only fallen at this stage of the EFL Cup in one of his previous seven seasons; a shootout defeat v Charlton in 05-06.
71'
S. Warnock gets yellow.
Warnock commits a late challenge at the halfway line and becomes the second player booked on the night.
70'
Into the final 20 minutes now and neither side looks rather keen on playing them out. They could serve as a point of pride for Burton, but the Championship side seem more eager to get back home than they do anything else.
68'
Well United have taken their foot off the gas here, but it's not the first time they have done so tonight. They've had a tendency to enter spells of prolonged possession in harmless areas before ramping into high gear again whenever they so please.
66'
It's become a question not of if, but how many for Manchester United, who still look like they have goals in them. Should they wish, they can run this scoreline up a bit. They have won 4-0, 4-0, 3-0 and 2-0 in their home matches this season, but have yet to hit five at Old Trafford early in the campaign.
64'
S. McTominay enters the game and replaces M. Rashford.
Rashford goes off to a thunderous applause, and deservedly so, as he's replaced by Scott McTominay for the final 25 minutes.
62'
STAT: Burton Albion are at the third round stage for just the third time in their history, losing to teams in the second and fourth tiers on their previous two appearances here.
60'
A. Martial has scored a goal for Manchester United! Assist by M. Rashford.
Rashford turns provider here as he picks up an assist to go with his two goals.
MAKE IT FOUR! United are cruising through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup here. Rashford does well to shield a pass with his first touch and play Martial through with his second, before the Frenchman finishes easily to add to the hosts' lead.
58'
DELICIOUS BIT OF SKILL! Sublime footwork from Martial to wriggle his way through in the area. He tries to bend a strike in at the far post, but Ripley reads it and reacts excellently to parry!
56'
It has been a tough night for the travelling Burton supporters, who have had little to cheer about. Their dream of a deep cup run is coming to an end here tonight, but they would love a consolation goal to make the trip worthwhile.
54'
United are rarely relinquishing possession in the opening 10 minutes of this second half and are doing their part to suck the life out of the match. There's not much of an atmosphere at Old Trafford in what has really been an anti-climactic match.
52'
STAT: Manchester United have won all four of their home matches this season without conceding, scoring 13 goals.
50'
GOAL! But it won't count... Shaw has been off the bench for a matter of minutes and he sends a cool finish past Ripley, but the offside flag is raised meaning it won't count. What an impact that would have been by the full-back!
48'
Burton start the second half much like they started the first, in the ascendency, and it leads to a chance from a header following a set-piece, but that drifts over the bar. United quickly reclaim possession, however, and are showing no signs of giving it up.
46'
S. Warnock enters the game and replaces B. Turner.
L. Murphy enters the game and replaces J. Allen.
L. Shaw enters the game and replaces Mata.
Luke Shaw comes on for the second half, replacing Mata.
Luke Murphy is brought on with the other swap, at the expense of Allen.
The visitors make two changes at the interval, the first of which sees Stephen Warnock replace Turner.
Here we go again! Second half underway at Old Trafford...
45' +1
HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 3-0 BURTON ALBION.
45'
There will be one minute added on at the end of this first half.
44'
OUCH! Varney goes flying through the air to try and get on the end of a ball in the air and winds up catching Smalling in the head with his knee! That looked a painful one for the United centre-half, who is actually the one deemed to have committed the foul here by the referee as he impeded Varney's ability to get to the ball in the air.
42'
H. Akpan gets yellow.
Frustration setting in for the visitors and it culminates in a hard foul from Akpan, who is shown the first yellow card of the match.
40'
The tempo has faded a bit since United registered their third. The remainder of this match is really nothing more than a formality now, or a chance for the hosts to pad their attacking stats a bit.
38'
STAT: Marcus Rashford has now scored four braces for Man Utd, with each one coming in a different competition.
36'
J. Lingard has scored a goal for Manchester United! Assist by A. Martial.
Martial picks up the assist.
AND THERE IT IS! Three goals and their ticket booked to the next round of the EFL Cup for the defending champions, but this one comes with a large stroke of luck. Martial slides a pass across for Lingard atop the penalty area, and his strike takes a massive deflection to wrong-foot the keeper and roll in at the near post.
35'
It's a long way back for Burton already with the two-goal deficit, but a third would remove any shred of doubt. United are not holding back in their search for that third goal and with the way things are going at the moment, you would not want to bet against them getting it before the break.
33'
Lovely trickery from Martial! Well his quick feet really are the envy, aren't they? A stunning bit of skill nearly sees him navigate his way through on goal, but a bit of desperate defending from Turner is just enough to get the job done.
31'
United in complete control now as they dictate the tempo and dominate possession, looking to put the game to bed before the interval. This hasn't gone at all according to plan for Burton. Manager Nigel Clough has his work cut out for him at half-time, if only just to keep this scoreline respectable.
29'
STAT: In six away matches this season Burton have just two victories, though both of those came in the EFL Cup.
27'
CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS! Varney unselfishly slips Mason through, but Romero comes up big! Back the other way go United and Mata sees a close-range effort turned onto the post by Ripley, before Martial's acrobatic overhead-kick is blocked by Flanagan!
25'
Great save from Ripley! United are wasting no time as they look to put the game to bed before the half-hour mark! Martial is on the receiving end this time as he's slipped through on goal, but Ripley is off his line expertly to close down the angle and make the save!
23'
Burton are really struggling to contain Rashford. The striker finds his way in on the end of a throughball here down the right channel, but an important last-ditch challenge from Naylor helps to snuff out the threat. Seconds later the hosts are in again, but Mata shoots straight at Ripley after a good pick-out from Martial.
21'
Well Burton's dream of pulling off the upset at Old Trafford, or forcing a replay back at the Pirelli Stadium, looks to be dead before the clock struck 20 minutes. They were so eager and energetic following kick-off, and looked the better side for much of the first five minutes, but it took just one chance for United to steal the lead - a lead they have since doubled.
19'
STAT: Manchester United have reached the fourth round of the EFL Cup in eight of the last nine seasons, with the exception being in 2014-15, losing out to Championship side MK Dons 4-0 in the second round.
17'
M. Rashford has scored a goal for Manchester United! Assist by D. Blind.
MY GOODNESS THAT IS SPECIAL! Romelu Lukaku smiles and applauds, looking on from the substitute's bench, as Rashford takes a simple square pass from Blind, turns and rifles a thunderous strike off the near post and in from 25 yards!
Blind is credited with the assist, but that's hardly what he would have expected after making what looked like a far from threatening pass to Rashford a few yards away.
15'
Romero spills it! Far from assured hands from the keeper who fails to catch the ball at the far post as a cross is whipped in, but luckily for him, Lindelof is on hand to head the ball away from harm.
13'
Burton have settled in again and look threatening as they keep United hemmed back for a prolonged spell. Darmian looks to have his hands full with Dyer this evening, the full-back bombing forward with regularity, and wins a free-kick high up the pitch in a great area for the visitors to whip in a cross.
11'
Following a wonderful energetic and fast-paced opening 10 minutes, things are quickly starting to sputter out a bit. Possession is exchanging hands with surpising frequency, with the ball largely being contained in midfield.
9'
STAT: These two sides have never met in the league or League Cup but did meet in the FA Cup back in January 2006 – with Man Utd winning the replay at Old Trafford 5-0 after a 0-0 draw at Burton.
7'
Nearly two! All of a sudden Burton are on the ropes! Nerves have kicked in and United nearly punish them again as Mata is played through, but his effort is denied by a terrific last-ditch challenge from Naylor!
5'
M. Rashford has scored a goal for Manchester United! Assist by J. Lingard.
Lingard provides the assist.
WELL THAT'S MORE ACCORDING TO SCRIPT! Burton's fiesty start is all for not as they trail inside five minutes! It's a simply worked goal from the hosts with Lingard picking out Rashford who confidently chips a finish in at the far post from 10 yards.
3'
Fiery start here from Burton, who are certainly up for the occasion. They're after every loose ball like wolves on the hunt, which has seen United stumble a bit from the off. In fact, it's the visitors who negotiate the first two attacks, with Romero forced into an early, albeit straightforward, save.
1'
AND THEY'RE OFF! Burton in yellow with black trim as they get the match underway, attacking right to left, with Manchester United in red tops and white shorts.
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the EFL Cup as Manchester United host Burton Albion at famous Old Trafford!
All eyes will be on Old Trafford tonight as EFL Cup defending champions Manchester United open their title defence, and will not take the tie lightly as they aim to keep up their terrific form to start the season.
United sit tied for first in the Premier League with their rivals City, and have got off to a flawless start in the Champions League. Jose Mourinho took the competition seriously last season, as evidenced by their title success, starting close to a full-strength side in their opening match against Northampton Town.
Burton Albion are heavy underdogs tonight, but their manager Nigel Clough is no stranger to success in domestic cups. With Sheffield United, Clough guided the Blades to semi-final finishes in both the FA and EFL Cups in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons.
Clough’s men beat four Premier League outfits en route to those semi-finals, nearly beating Hull City and Tottenham in the last-four. Manchester United pose a much more daunting task for Clough and Burton tonight, but when the magic of the cup is about, all a side needs is a bit of belief.
CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS:
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): Romero; Darmian, Lindelof, Smalling, Blind; Carrick, Herrera; Lingard, Mata, Martial; Rashford.
Jose Mourinho makes nine changes to his side from their victory over Everton at the weekend. Sergio Romero deputises in goal, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind are at full-back with Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling at centre-half. Marcus Rashford leads the line, one of two who stay in the side from Sunday, along with Juan Mata. Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial flank Rashford.
Nigel Clough makes nine changes of his own from Burton's victory over Fulham on Saturday, with only Ben Turner and Jamie Allen keeping their place in the side. Joe Mason and Luke Varney form a partnership up top tonight.
A fourth Manchester United brace for Marcus Rashford was followed by a Jesse Lingard goal as Burton Albion are carved apart through 45 minutes at Old Trafford. It's the hosts who are in cruise control as they have all but booked their place in the next round of the EFL Cup.
That's all for our live coverage, thanks for following along. Goodbye!
Smooth sailing for Manchester United who are into the fourth round of the EFL Cup on the back of a dominant victory over Championship side Burton Albion, highlighted by Marcus Rashford's brace. Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial also got in on the act for United, who have looked like world beaters in five matches, all victories, at Old Trafford this season.
